The Importance of Desk Selection in Open Office Design
In an open office the desk is the focal piece. Because the team sits in one volume, the desk line carries both collaboration and each person’s work surface. Modular systems have been used on this plan since the 1960s; the desk is the first part of that system. This article looks at shape, size and fit in desk selection.
How the Desk Line Is Written
The desk’s shape, model and colour set the office’s language. A social room can sit apart; the work surface is still its own decision. Ergonomic height, a shared line with the neighbouring desk and the cable run belong together.

Colour, Fit and Edge
Furniture follows the room’s colour and stance. If a more formal line is wanted, the desk should carry that weight; a lighter language needs pale colour and a simple section. A small planted edge softens the view; that is a visual pause, not a promise.
