Table Design in Meeting Rooms: Rectangular or Round?

Table design in a meeting room does not end with picking a comfortable, plain top. The room is where the day’s closed work sits; table choice decides who sees whom and where the cable goes. A modern, ergonomic chair carries a long sit. Shape is not written as a fashion sentence.

A decision, a project and a presentation sit here in turn. When a work setting is written, output is not discussed without table geometry. Paper, a laptop and a water glass have to find a place on the same top. Round and rectangular are the two common options; which one functions depends on the agenda.

When a Rectangular Table Earns Its Keep

A rectangle is used to line chairs on the long side in a large group. Ease of use is a top that slides and a cable trough on the centre line. Face-to-face talk is possible on the two long sides; not at the short end. Clear communication is therefore not equal at every seat.

Personal things sit in a strip in front of each person; mess is limited to that strip. A rectangle does not take little space in every room. Set parallel and to scale, it leaves a walking strip; set diagonal or too long, it closes the room. Comfort in a large group comes from gap and back distance.

When a Round Table Earns Its Keep

A round top removes the head seat. Everyone sees everyone; eye contact helps in a short debate. Collaboration is not strained in this geometry. Sharing ideas is easy; it is not ranked as “the right choice” for teamwork — the headcount has to fit the diameter.

As Umut GÜRLER Interior Architecture - Ankara Interior Architecture we write the agenda first at survey: a rectangle for briefing and presentation, a round table for a debate with equal voice. Furniture’s effect on output is real; picking an architect is not a plan on its own. Equal sight at a round table sits separately in how round-table choice affects meeting productivity.
