Strengthening Communication in Open Offices: Effective Design Strategies 

Firms choose an open office because it gives collaboration a floor. The hard part is that this openness should grow talk without also scattering it. Clear conversation is the spine of a working relationship. This article ties design strategies — a shared niche, a sightline and a digital room — to the office plan.

Physical Interaction

Collaboration and distraction walk the same line. If a shared room and a meeting niche sit beside the walking strip, not on it, chance talk grows and desk interruption shrinks. A social corner with easy seating is a pause for an idea and a relationship.

• Put the shared niche at the end of the desk row, not on the circulation
• A low or glass screen: the view stays open, the sound is partly cut
• Small, separate volumes for a call and for focus
