Meeting Room Designs: Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Rectangular Tables

A meeting room is a closed workroom used often in an office. Effective use is not built by calling every detail “important”; table shape, light and seat spacing sit on one diagram. Meeting-room design starts with furniture because the table decides who sees whom. Light and wall colour carry the atmosphere; if the table is wrong, atmosphere is not enough.

Furniture choice changes the air of the room. That does not mean every choice will be right. Rectangle, round or boat shape is written after the agenda and the headcount. At survey we lock how many people sit, and for how long, first.

Where a Rectangular Table Earns Its Place

A rectangular table lets more chairs line the long axis. In a large group that carries a count a round table’s diameter cannot hold. People on the long side see each other at an angle; that is enough for a short briefing and passing papers. Interaction is not ranked as “easier” — the axis is chosen for the talk.

The cable trough and the display sit on the table’s long centre line. Laptops line up; cables do not pile. A rectangular top, set parallel to the room, leaves a walking strip. That does not mean every rectangle fits a small room. If scale is not written, the table eats the room.

Where a Rectangular Table Pinches

A person on the short end looks at backs or shoulders along the long side. Collaboration weakens at that angle; the chair at the head also makes hierarchy visible. That is not wanted in every meeting. In a debate that wants equal voice, a rectangle can pile the talk at one end.

If the table is too large for the room, the walking strip closes and a second layout cannot be set. Flexibility returns when the top can slide and chairs can nest — a fixed giant rectangle does not give that.

Furniture Carries Sightlines

In a meeting room the table and chairs carry most of the day. An ergonomic back and an adjustable arm make three hours possible; they are not a guarantee of focus. A rectangular top brings faces onto one line along the long side. That can make an exchange of views easier; it does not promise an original project.

Light reads the face and the screen separately. If the table is glossy, reflection spoils the talk. The room layout leaves space for a chair to pull back and a door to open. In a multi-purpose room the same table may not serve every job. Design of multi-purpose meeting rooms tells that change in another rhythm.
