What is the Difference Between Interior Architecture and Decoration?
The definitions of interior architecture and decoration are often mixed in everyday speech. One reason is that the title is poorly protected in the field; people without a licence introduce themselves as interior architects and the line blurs. A licensed interior architect has authority over the plan, the room layout and the application inside the building.
Interior work is not limited to the first colour or fabric that comes to mind. The discipline runs from furniture materials to finishes, from socket positions to colour, from plaster to timber. That is knowledge work: the right material also prevents later harm.
A small error does not only cost money. It can create a health problem. Decoration is the word that most often collapses into this picture.
Decoration is the applied layer of surface and furniture after the plan is set. The decorator moves on the information the interior architect has already given. Many decoration firms now call themselves interior architects. That is misleading and unethical.
In short: interior architecture is plan, room layout and application. Decoration is surface and furniture after that plan. One is not a prettier name for the other; the order and the authority differ.

What are the differences between Decorator and Interior Architecture Professions?
