Interior architect Umut Mehmet Gürler, who practises in Ankara, described how interiors changed with the pandemic.
The outbreak that began in Wuhan altered how people use their homes. Gürler says that working from home turned a dwelling into both an office and a place to rest. Longing for soil, outdoors and animals sent people from residences and flats toward detached houses with gardens. Interior work is expected to follow, and the people who do it have had to widen their view.
People in Ankara asked for homes that could be a house, a school and an office at once. Gürler, a graduate of the Interior Architecture department at Çankaya University's faculty of architecture, says colleagues should change how they work under these conditions. By 2021 his YouTube channel was reaching thousands of people. He has published practical advice for making a home more comfortable and more up to date, and he asks people to follow sources that keep up with how buildings are changing.
A home has to meet everyone who lives in it. The interior architect has to read the family's life, the number of people, their interests, their work and what they expect. Gürler also says each architect should bring current technology and a present-day eye into the work. Detached houses that can serve as both an office and a place to rest are what many clients now ask for, and the profession has to be ready for that.
